Your prospects no longer just Google things — more and more of them ask ChatGPT and Gemini “which 3D printer should I buy” directly. AI answers for them, and it answers for your competitors too. This report sets out to find one thing: in consumer 3D printing, who are the AI platforms speaking for?
Methodology: 50 representative questions across consumer FDM hobbyists (ICP A) and resin/miniature printers (ICP B) — sourced from Reddit, Quora, PAA, and review aggregators. Each question was sent to ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AIO, Perplexity via the same prompt; responses were parsed for brand mentions, product mentions, citation domains, recommendation attributions, and context-window sentiment. Country: US. Brand mention counts are whole-word, alias-normalized.
A few terms first: Share of Voice = a brand's mentions ÷ all brand mentions; recommendation attribution = who AI names when it says “best / top pick”; citation source = which sites the answer's reference links point to; awareness / comparison / decision stage = how far the question sits along the buying journey.
TL;DR
The Big-4 capture 89.0% of all brand mentions: Bambu Lab, Elegoo, Creality, Anycubic. Bambu Lab alone holds 35.1% — 1.4× the #2 brand Elegoo. Everyone else (Phrozen, FlashForge, Prusa, Uniformation) is statistically invisible.
Perplexity cites YouTube 42.0% of the time — by far the most UGC-heavy source pattern; the other platforms favor review blogs and Reddit.
When AI gives a 'best for X' recommendation, the winners diverge: ChatGPT: Bambu Lab (15/54); Gemini: Bambu Lab (8/21); Google AIO: Bambu Lab (6/21); Perplexity: Bambu Lab (6/19). The same question can produce different recommended brands depending on platform.

Mention count tells you who AI is talking about; recommendation count tells you who AI is endorsing. We parse markdown headers and inline cues like "Best overall", "Best budget", "Top pick" and pair them with the nearest brand/product mention.
